Serge Belamant was born in Tulle, France, in 1953. He moved with his family to South Africa when he was fourteen. He attended high school in Johannesburg where he enjoyed rugby, chess, and his school work. He graduated high school on an exemption pass and attended Whitwatersrand University. His first major was engineering. Later, he changed his major to computer science and applied mathematics. In his third year he transferred to The University of South Africa to study information systems. Having not finished his degree, he left to join the work force at age twenty-two.
His first job was at Matrix, where he created software applications to analyze water levels to find the optimal level for dams. He was later put in charge of road planning projects. He later started working at Control Data where he became a head analyst. Continuing on his road to success, he became a consultant at Bancorp where he worked on risk management and assessment. Serge Belamant left Bancorp to join SASWITCH, a company owned by the RSA banks. While at SASWITCH he created a National ATM switch that solved performance problems.
In 1989 Serge Belamant left SASWITCH to start Net1 Technologies. His first success was the Funds Transfer System. VISA hired Net1 to create an application using his Funds Transfer System and Universal Electronic Payment System. He moved to the United States to accomplish this task. The end result of this was the Chip Offline Pre-Authorized Card, where he successfully merged two technologies together.
In 2005 Net1 was listed as a public company on the United States stock market, and Serge Belamant was listed as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. Serge Belamant holds several patents for his technology and has received numerous honorary degrees. He has since left Net1 and started Zilch Technology Limited. He continues to invent more blockchain technology and develop software for the banking sector.
